The Night Circus Week

Law school ruined pleasure reading for me. It has taken me several years to retrain my brain how to read for enjoyment, rather than picking out fact patterns and speeding through the text. I still don’t read as much as I used to, but I’m getting there.

When I read an article about an author whose first book started a bidding war between two prominent publishers AND that the book had already been optioned for a movie, I had to check it out. I was not disappointed.

“The Night Circus” by Erin Morgenstern blends together the rich ambiance of a mysterious circus, the allure of magicians and sorcery, and a compelling love story.  And, while many books make you fall in love with the characters (which is certainly the case here), I also fell in love with the circus itself…and its otherworldly food!

Stay tuned for some scrumptious circus food!

I absolutely LOVED this book! Definitely a great read. Oh and it’s on audio discs too. The narrator does a great job of acting out each characters parts too. =)
Looking forward to your treats for this book!

I have this on my list, but haven’t gotten to it…I love an endorsement. There is an amazing Ringling Museum in Sarasota, and a totally creepy and sad circus cemetery in Chicago. I am rather obsessed with old circus stuff…

Hi Susie! I think you would definitely enjoy this book if you like “old world circus” – it feels very vintage, even though it is fictional.

Have you read Water for Elephants? I’ve heard it is a really great book, but I’ve seen the movie and I think it would be difficult for me to read (anything about animal abuse is tough for me to get through!).

SUCH a beautiful book! I really enjoyed the imagery that Erin Morgenstern created. I think the clock was one of the objects in the circus that I would really like to see brought to life in a movie, but then I am always a bit scared that it won’t live up to the image I have in my mind! I am very much looking forward to your creations! You never disappoint!

Water for Elephants is an amazing book! Hard at times, yes, very hard, but beautifully written and it just sucks you in. I highly recommend it!

Hi Sara! I totally agree – you start with a detailed world in your head and sometimes the movie just can’t live up to it. I think it could be a really incredible movie though!

I agree with Sara, I recommended the book to everyone before the movie came out. And although I love to see the written word onscreen, I was a little horrified at the movie, the abuse was really hard to digest, and somehow it just wasn’t like that for me in the book. I will download this book as soon as I get those Fathers Day cookies done! Why is it the cookies for family are the easiest to put off?!

Yeah – the abuse in the movie was so hard for me to watch, I wasn’t sure if I could handle it written down! It sounds like I should give it a second look :)

@Jennifer – Definitely read “Water for Elephants”. The movie was OK, but the book is much, much better.

Can’t wait to see what you come up with for “The Night Circus”. I read the book and there is so much imagery in it to play with. Looks like I may need to check out the audio book with Yesenia’s recommendation.

A well done audio book is a treasure. My hubby isn’t a big reader so I suggested he listen to the Harry Potter books. Jim Dale does an absolutely fabulous job. He had different voices and accents for so many characters that they kept a reference for him so he could do the characters the same, even if there were books separating when they showed back up again. (He was also the narrator for the TV show Pushing Daisies)
