Wicked Week

Have I mentioned that I love Broadway musicals?

Well, I do. Like, a lot.

After being exposed to “Rent” in high school, I became a musical junkie. From old school Sondheim to the newer, sassier musicals like The Book of Mormon and Avenue Q, I love them all. I belt out showtunes in my car (alone, of course). I have soundtracks of musicals I’ve never even seen (several, actually). I have forced friends and family to watch some of the musicals that are available on DVD, like “Into the Woods” and “Chess.”

And while I could never pick a favorite, Wicked is special to me. It’s the only musical I’ve seen twice on the Broadway stage.

The first time was with a really special guy who took me to NYC for our 6 month dating anniversary. It snowed as we walked to the theater. I ended up marrying him.

The second time was with my mom, just the two of us, the day before her 50th birthday. It was a total surprise and I scored incredible seats. It was amazing.

So, I feel like I experienced this show with not just one, but two of the most important people in my life. That makes it special.

So, get ready for some Oz inspired treats for the next week!

Do you like musicals? What is your favorite?

Oooh I can’t wait! I finally got to see Wicked earlier this year and it was amazing! Mary Poppins was pretty awesome, I saw that last year. Next year Beauty and the Beast is coming and I am pretty stoked about that too. :)

I haven’t seen Mary Poppins or Beauty and the Beast, but I would love to :) I’m going to try to catch The Book of Mormon in DC on tour. Fingers crossed!

My one and only musical love will always be Cats. Boy, I love it!

Oh yes, Cats! I never got to see it on Broadway (sniffle), but I did see a touring production several years ago. I also have it on DVD :)

I have the DVD too, and I saw a live performance a couple years ago but it was the Italian translation (a rather good one admittedly, but not the same thing by far). Back when I took my last English Literature exam, I spewed an impressive critique of Eliot’s The Waste Land, and at the end of it I had to blurt out, “I can’t believe the same guy who wrote this also wrote Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats”. My prof. had to laugh at that… :p

Haha! I was an English major, and remember reading “The Waste Land”…admittedly, not my favorite! But, I do have much love for “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” :)

Oh the memories! I think I’ll dare eat a peach to that one right away. Diced and plopped into a nice cold sangria! XD

I’m a musical fan, too! I’m lucky enough to be a volunteer usher at the local theater in Seattle. As a perk, I get to watch all the touring Broadway shows for free! (sometimes I have to stand for the whole show but I think it’s worth it.) One of my favorite shows is Spamalot.

Wow – that’s awesome, Mike! If I lived closer to DC, I would totally do this. Alas, my little city doesn’t have any “real” theaters.

I’ve heard fabulous things about Spamalot :)

Saw Wicked in Chicago and loved it! I wouldn’t mind seeing Avenue Q and Book of Mormon too! Excited to see what you make this week!!

Even though Avenue Q has been banished to the off-Broadway stage, I still REALLY want to see it! It won the best musical, for goodness sake’s! (BEATING Wicked that year!). I will forever mourn the fact that I never got to see Spring Awakening. The music is incredible!

saw a peek at Matilda which is in the UK now and will hit Broadway next year. It was one of my kids favorite movies, I’ll miss Danny DeVito, but it looks like fun! Chocolate cake anyone????
