This is the cookie equivalent to “A dark and stormy night…”

Dramatic dark chocolate cookies with chocolate chunks and a sprinkling of sea salt. Mysterious, dark, and unexpected. Perfect for a sophisticated Halloween soiree…or a regular ‘ol weeknight when you need a little indulgence.

Treat yourself this Halloween – don’t you deserve it?

Ingredients
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ⅔ cup dark unsweetened cocoa powder (Hershey’s special dark, for example)
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt, plus additional for sprinkling
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips or chunks
  • 1½ cups white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  2. Sift together the flour, dark unsweetened cocoa, salt, and baking soda. Set aside.
  3. Melt together the butter and ¾ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips in the microwave, following the directions on the chocolate package. Mixture should be liquidy and smooth.
  4. Beat together the melted chocolate mixture, white sugar, eggs, and vanilla until combined. Gradually add the flour mixture. Dough will be sticky.
  5. Fold in 1¼ cup chocolate chips or chunks.
  6. Using a cookie scoop, drop cookies onto parchment lined baking sheet, about 2 inches apart. Cookies will spread while baking.
  7. Bake for 13-15 minutes, or until tops begin to crack. Do not overbake! Immediately after removing from oven, sprinkle tops of cookies with sea salt.
  8. Let cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

I love the combo of chocolate and sea salt! I’ll have to give these a try.

Just a quick fyi… I noticed in the recipe to print, in the description under the title, it says “seat salt”… That is SO something that I would do.

Looks delicious! I bet the sea salt elevates the taste. Do you watch Modern Family? There was a funny scene of adding salt to chocolate milk. These cookies remind me of that. :)

I do watch Modern Family and I totally don’t remember that scene! Haha. Maybe I should put the laptop away when I’m watching TV and I might actually remember these things… ;)

I love chocolate with salt, so these cookies seem perfect! I recently was given a box of smoked sea salt and I’ve been wondering whether I can use a touch of it in a dessert or not. That may be too crazy, I don’t know. In any case, I’ll definitely try these out with some regular sea salt sprinkled over the top. Thanks for posting the recipe!

Hi Katie! I’ve never tried smoked sea salt, but I’m always of the opinion that you should try anything! Maybe just put it on one cookie to test it :) I’d love to know if you tried it and how it came out!
