Zombie Fingers

Mmmmmmm….Twinkies….

***Insert Homer Simpson drooling noise here***

I don’t discriminate against snack cakes, but I think Hostess Cakes makes some of the best – the ubiquitous Twinkie, those famous swirly cupcakes, and, my personal favorite, the Ho Ho. It’s easy to throw a Twinkie into your kid’s lunchbox or indulge in a Ho Ho after dinner, but you can also incorporate them into your Halloween festivities!

You can find tons of ideas on decorating snack cakes from bloggers like Confessions of a Cookbook Queen or Hungry Happenings, but I wanted to create something myself to share.

These may be a bit tamer than my usual fare, but I think they’re a perfect blend of cute and gross and easy enough to make with family!

 
Ingredients
  • Twinkies (duh!)
  • White or off-white canned frosting (NOT whipped!), along with green and red food coloring OR you can substitute the frosting with green and red candy melts. Your choice – keep in mind that if you use frosting, it will result in a softer finish that can be a bit messy to eat and will never completely harden, but I personally think it tastes better!
  • White, yellow, or green candy melts (regardless of whether or not your use frosting, you will need a small number of candy melts for the fingernails)
  • Cooking spray
Instructions
  1. Start by chilling the Twinkies in the fridge for about 10-15 minutes; this will help with the coating process. Also, spray a wire rack with the cooking oil.
  2. Make the zombie fingernails by trimming a white, yellow, or green candy melt with kitchen scissors to the correct shape. Then, use a small knife to create grooves and chips in the nail. I got this fabulous idea from one of my favorite bloggers, Darla at Bakingdom!
  3. Frosting Method: If you are using canned frosting to coat your Twinkies, spoon the frosting into a microwave safe dish, reserving a small amount for the blood. Tint the frosting green. Microwave the frosting in 10 second increments until it becomes liquidy and smooth, like a glaze.
  4. Candy Melt Method: If you are using candy melts in lieu of canned frosting, melt green candy melts according to the directions on the package. Make sure you are using melts that are already green or an oil-based coloring to make them green – regular food coloring and candy melts do not mix!
  5. Take Twinkies out of the fridge and dip them into the green coating and place on a wire rack. Don’t worry if one end isn’t completely covered. Immediately add a candy melt fingernail. Place coated Twinkies in the refrigerator for about 5 minutes IF you used frosting. Otherwise, perform the next step right away.
  6. Take a butter knife sprayed with cooking oil and create grooves in the coating directly under the nail and then further down, where the knuckle would be.
  7. Using red candy melts or canned frosting tinted red and microwaved, drizzle/spoon the red coating at the opposite end of the finger.

So, what do you think…use the candy melts or the frosting? What was used in this photo?

Hi Jennifer! I actually used both :) The green part of the finger is melted frosting and the red part is melted candy melts. If I had green candy melts, I probably would have used all candy melts, since even though the frosting is tastier to me, it never sets completely, so it is a little sticky to eat!
