Caramel Pecan Brie by Not Your Momma's Cookie

Well, now I’ve gone and done something I said I would never do on the blog.

I went to the dark side.

The savory side.

In my defense, cheese courses straddle the line between sweet and savory and I’ve totally seen them on dessert menus. But, I always think, who chooses cheese over chocolate, cakes, or ice cream!? Not I.

But then, I met a lady who changed all of that.

For the non-Game of Thrones watchers, this is Olenna Tyrell. Not only is she strong-willed, she is feisty to boot. I can’t resist a feisty, little old lady.

There is only one thing you need to know about her.

She wants her cheese. NOW. (Cheese scene at about 3:38)

Now, I have no idea what weird, crazy cheese they were actually served. It was probably dragon milk cheese or something. I used brie instead which is totally the same thing, I bet.

Serve this easy and delicious cheese with my lemon cakes. You could serve the cheese after the lemon cakes, but I wouldn’t recommend it. You don’t want the House of Tyrell coming down on your head, do you?

Olenna Tyrell’s Caramel Pecan Brie

Author:
Serves: 2
Ingredients
  • 1 wheel of Trader Joe’s goat cheese brie
  • 1½ tablespoons of dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cold butter, chopped into small pieces
  • 1 tablespoon chopped pecans
  • Apples and toasted bread for serving
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Cut cheese wheel in half horizontally, so you have two circles of cheese. Place one circle in the bottom of of ramekin (my white ramekins from Target were a perfect fit!).
  3. Sprinkle ½ tablespoon of brown sugar onto top of cheese. Top with the second layer of cheese. Sprinkle remaining brown sugar, chopped butter, and pecans onto the top of the cheese.
  4. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until cheese is melted and yummy. Serve with apples and small pieces of toasted bread.

goat cheese brie? that is a new one, but TJ is a good 3 hours, not that it’s stopped me before! I found this scene very troubling, I have this deep seated fear there is some bad stuff about to go down, but the woman in me is hoping Granny is a total game changer and the wimpy boy-king will be a cake pop soon!

I’m definitely curious how it is all going to go down. I think Margaery can handle Joffrey pretty well though :) We will see!!

Yummm…. While I too wonder who would choose a cheese dish over something fun like chocolate cake, that picture looks pretty darn appetizing! I like mixing it up, so thanks for the change of pace! :)

Thanks, Michelle! I don’t anticipate many savory recipes in my future, but it was a fun change :)

I’m loving the Tyrell storyline. Olenna is such a scene-stealer! :) I’d be totally okay with more savory, cheesy goodness posts from you. YUM!

Me too! Not just Olenna, but Margaery too. I LOVED her as Anne Boleyn in The Tudors – the show wasn’t the same after she lost her head ;)

Yeah, I would never choose cheese over chocolate! But, as a snack – why not?! Looks gorgeous with the apples!

I’m usually not a fan of brie – but I think you may have just converted me! :)

You may just like goat cheese brie then! The flavor isn’t as strong as regular brie :)

Savory recipes are tough for us baking bloggers ;) But this was a great way to ease in with the pecans and sugar and apples. Almost like eating dessert.

26 Jennifer April 30, 2013 at 3:17 pm

Very true, Laura! It could totally be one of those weird cheese desserts at a fancy restaurant ;)

Okay, so while I don’t watch GOT, I DO know that any show that endorses cheese similar or identical to this is A+ in my book! I LOVE brie and I super love when it’s sweetened up with brown sugar and nuts. This. Is. Perfection. Just give me the spoon and leave me be!

Thanks, Hayley! There isn’t a ton of food talk on the show, but when they start talking about cheese and lemon cakes, I’m there! :)

Though I am leaving off the nuts (allergies), I am absolutely making this! The caramel makes it dessert food for sure. :) I have just begun to watch Game of Thrones (from the beginning) trying to catch up. Don’t you think this brie would be perfect to munch on during out Game of Throne-a-thons? :)
