How to Make Realistic Gelatin Brains by

Hubby likes zombie stuff.

A lot.

I even threw him a surprise zombie birthday party and made this fabulous cake:

Zombie Cake by Not Your Momma's Cookie By the way, I’m still waiting for my “best wife” medal for that one, because it was fondant, and hard, and awesome.

So, what do you make for the zombie lover who has seen everything?

Realistic jello brain!

How to Make Realistic Gelatin Brains by

Sure, you’ve probably seen gelatin brains in those bright, fun colors, but there is something about a nice, gray tone that ups the creepy factor. It’s easier than you think, I swear!

First, of course, you will need a brain gelatin mold. I used this one, but any brain mold will do.

How to Make Realistic Gelatin Brains
  • 2 six ounce boxes of gelatin (a flavor with a paler color works best, like peach or watermelon, but you can use almost any flavor)
  • 1¾ cup boiling water
  • ¾ cup cold water (kept in fridge)
  • 12 ounce can FAT FREE evaporated milk (FF is a must)
  • Black gel food coloring
  1. Grease your brain mold thoroughly. You can use vegetable oil, applying with a paper towel, or cooking spray.
  2. Add boiling water to gelatin in a large bowl. Stir until gelatin is dissolved, about 2 minutes.
  3. Add cold water (from fridge). Stir. Add evaporated milk and stir again.
  4. Add a small amount of black food coloring and whisk thoroughly. Keep adding small amounts of food coloring until desired shade is achieved. Remember – you can always add color, but you can’t remove it!
  5. Pour into brain mold. Chill several hours or overnight.

I used to dress up as a demented chef every year and carry a jello brain on a silver platter and have a handful of plastic spoons trying to get people to try it. I think I used peach jello and milk…it’s been a few years. But a brain surgeon at the party said this was the most revolting, realistic thing he had seen and refused to eat a spoonful of jello! The fondant brain with the knife is a work of art…..I told my son next year we are going to the Walking Dead Haunted House in Universal….how fun is that?!

22 Jennifer October 26, 2013 at 11:36 am

Oh, I bet the Walking Dead house is going to be a blast!! :)

Isn’t this clever. I can’t say that a brain mold is ever a purchase I have considered making!

Haha – understandable! ;)

This is really cool and gross at the same time, but I guess that’s what Halloween’s all about.

Such a cool idea! I still love that brain cake you posted a while ago. You did an incredible job with the detailed fondant and the blood accents. I’d reminded your hubby about that best wife award if I were you. :-P
