I feel like I’ve seen a lot of bread pudding recipes lately and it got me in the mood to make one myself. I’ve never made one before and I’ve had some not so great versions, so I was a little hesitant. But, when I found a recipe that called for these:
I couldn’t resist. Is it even possible to make anything yucky out of Krispy Kreme doughnuts?
The unparalleled queen of Southern cuisine, Paula, featured this recipe and I didn’t make one change (except for a small tweak to the sauce). I decided to trust the experts for my first foray into the world of bread pudding!
Ingredients (halved from the original recipe)
- 1 dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts – I’m assuming any glazed doughnuts would work, but come on – get the Krispy Kremes!
- 7 ounces sweetened condensed milk
- 1 egg, beaten
- 5 ounces of fruit cocktail, undrained
- 4.5 ounces of raisins
- 1 tsp. of cinnamon
- a pinch of salt
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. Cut each doughnut into 6 pieces and place in a large bowl.
I will admit that a few pieces didn’t make it into the bowl…
3. Dump all of the rest of the ingredients on top of the doughnuts and let sit for a bit (I waited about 10-15 minutes to allow more time for the bread to absorb the liquid).
4. Stir gently until well combined and the liquid is greatly decreased. Place in a greased pan.
5. Admire.
6. Bake for about 35-45 minutes.
It is wonderful on it’s own, but the sauce takes it over the top! It’s easy –
- 1/2 stick of butter
- 1/2 lb of confectioner’s sugar
- Rum, if desired (I used half and half instead to add more liquid and cut the sweetness a little)
Melt the butter in a saucepan, gradually add the powdered sugar, add liquid for your desired consistency, heat until hot, and drizzle!
