When hubby and I went to Asheville, he was super excited to tour the Biltmore estate.
Myself, less so.
It’s not that I don’t appreciate its historical significance. It’s just that I’ve seen tons of historical homes, palaces, whatnot. When you’ve seen places like Peterhof Palace and Versailles, other fancy homes aren’t quite as awe-inspiring.
But, I try to indulge him and we paid the crazy fee to get in to start the tour.
Little did I know that Biltmore is not only the largest estate in the United States, it is also known as pregnant lady hell.
1. There is no air conditioning. Which means that when it is 90 degrees plus outside, it becomes a festering inferno of stinky, grumpy people. One weird little side effect of being pregnant is that your sense of smell is off the chain, so there is no way to escape the stench of BO and cheap perfume. Plus, hot = miserable.
2. There are no bathrooms inside. And, once you start the tour (which takes at least 2 hours), the velvet ropes herd you along, preventing you from efficiently getting to the one bathroom that is outside without backtracking all the way to the start. I’ve been drinking water like a mofo during this pregnancy, so this set-up was quite anxiety provoking.
3. Stairs, stairs, and more stairs. The tour (mandated by the evil velvet ropes) only allows you to do the tour in one particular path. Now, I would think that you would do each floor up to the top, and then downstairs to exit.
I was wrong, my friends.
You go to and from the same levels several times. Why? I have no idea.
Normally, stairs are no biggie. I mean, we could all use a little exercise. But, being pregnant means that you get winded doing ANYTHING. Including one flight of stairs. Add in the real possibility of heat stroke/stench stroke (which, I’m telling you, MUST be a real thing), and each flight of stairs is like an insurmountable mountain on the way up, and a frightening opportunity to fall on the way down. It is a rollercoaster of pure pregnancy madness.
Luckily, I made it out alive, though pretty sweaty and whiny.
Now, since my husband has been quite patient with his sweaty, whiny, cranky, forgetful, pregnant wife, I made him some fluffernutter blondies! It starts with a peanut buttery blondie base, then stick ‘em in the oven and broil them to get a pretty, gooey, yummy marshmallow topping!
- 1 cup salted butter, room temperature
- 1½ cups light brown sugar
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup chunky peanut butter
- 1½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 eggs
- 2⅔ cup flour
- 1½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ cup heavy cream
- Approximately 40-50 large marshmallows (or 1-2 bags mini marshmallows)
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease a 9×13 pan.
- Whisk together the flour and baking powder. Set aside.
- Cream together the butter, brown sugar, white sugar, and peanut butter. Mix in the vanilla extract. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Stir in the flour mixture until just combined. Mix in the cream. Mixture will be thick.
- Press into greased pan and bake for 40-45 minutes. Remove from oven.
- Turn on the broiler setting on oven (I used a “low” broiler setting). Cover the top of the blondies with mini marshmallows or large marshmallows cut in half (I used large because it is what I had on hand). Return to oven and watch carefully! Broil for 1-2 minutes or until marshmallows are nice and toasted.

Hahahahaha!! I am not laughing at your misery but, I know how you feel about Biltmore. We went 3 years ago on one of the hottest days in the history of forever and I was nothing but a sweaty mess when we left. When we went, they didn’t have a lot of the rooms open. It was nice to see but, I won’t go back unless it is 20 below 0! I can’t imagine going in your condition! YIKES!!
Can’t wait to try these fluffernutter blondies. I hate to admit it but, I have never had one. Now I can:)
I’m glad someone can relate!
It is not very fun when it is so darn hot! My husband did enjoy it though, so it was still worth going…maybe
You poor thing!! That sounds AWFUL! OMG
I however am in luuuurve with these fluffernutter blondies SOOOOO YUMMEHHHHHH ohmyyyyyyworddd
Thanks, Kayle! I swear I’m not normally so whiny, but holy cow, I was miserable! I think it would have been totally different if I wasn’t pregnant and it wasn’t so hot!
That is terrible! You’d think there would at least be one elevator in there, you know, so it can be wheelchair and handicap accessible (especially since thats like, the law…). At least you got some fluffernutter blondies out of it!
I did see one elevator, but I was too timid to use it
They were typically full of handicapped/older patrons and I was trying to suck it up!
You poor thing! I think all pregnant women should get perfectly cool glass’s of water with lime in them, and fans and a bunch of burly men carrying them on a chair wherever they go. You’re making a HUMAN after all. You’ve got enough on your plate. Here, but a fluffernutter blondie on your plate. You need it.
Oh Sarah, if only!
That sounds terrible! Sorry
The blondies look fabulous!
Thank you, Nessa!
OH my gosh that sounds like the tour from hell. I would probably have made a scene and found a way out of the velvet rope. Then my poor husband would have been embarrassed and I would have had to make him treats too. All roads lead to sugar.
Indeed they do, Carrie! I was trying not to be cranky about it and I did finish the tour….I just wasn’t feeling it, by the end
LOL. This made me laugh. We went there in August few years back, it was 95F outside. Inside it was probably 100F if not more. Air was standing, they had fans running, people where sweating, fans were distributing sweat smell everywhere…I can totally relate to what you went through. It was really unbearable, but still we tried to enjoy it as much as possible. my favorite stop was the vineyard..it was cool there, no I shouldn’t say that I really enjoyed seeing the variety of decor and being 5 9 I always wonder how would I survive with such short beds. It was nice to see something that had a European feel to it, I’m sure you know what I mean. What I found amazing though was that Biltmore had indoor plumbing, and I absolutely loved the library.
I actually personally know a distant cousin of the landscape architect Frederick Olmstead who designed the gardens there, he also designed the Central Park in NYC. One thing I regret is not taking the picture of Sunflower field that was there just by the vineyard. We wanted to stop by thinking we could just go back but it was a one way only so we missed on that. It is my dream to have a picture of sunflower fields.
Your Blondies look delicious!
That tour does not sound like my kind of thing and I’m not pregnant. Anything that involves no air condition is not for me. But anything peanut butter and marshmallow is awesome in my book. I ate a homemade pb cookie with a homemade marshmallow last night and a pb cereal bar with a homemade marshmallow this morning. Clearly I have a pb and marshmallow problem
Haha – that is a nice problem to have, Laura!
MMMM the marshmallow on top looks delicious!!
Thanks, Elizabeth! That was the fun part of the recipe
Oh my goodness, these not only sound amazing, they are beautiful! Sorry about all the stairs….
Thanks so much, Kim!
I’m so sorry about your pregnant lady hell excursion, and yes, stench stroke is a real thing! On a much happier note, your fluffernutter look delicious. I love blondies, and marshmallows can only make them better.
Thanks, Aida!
It’s all a distant memory now
Sounds like you had fun!
I’m glad you made it out alive though so you could make these wicked awesome looking fluffernutter blondies!
Oh yeah, loads of fun
I had a similar situation when I went on a plantation tour in New Orleans. No A/C in the house. The non-pregnant me gets super whiny when I’m hot. I jetted to the air-conditioned gift shop while my friends finished the tour.
I would have totally retreated to the gift shop/bathroom if the velvet ropes weren’t taunting me with their “one path”-ness
I’d be miserable too and I’m NOT pregnant! These fluffernutter blondies would cure me of all that! I love the combo and these unique blondies would go far to cure my sweet tooth. Delectable.
Thanks Reeni! It was quite an ordeal, but I made it through, whiny as always
The one time I’ve visited the Biltmore it was a super hot day in June and I can totally see where you are coming from! However, on the contrary, these blondies look so incredible! And, this reminds me that I still need to make your peanut butter and marshmallow fluffernutter cookies. So many yummy treats!
Oh yes, those are quite yummy too!
He should have made them for you! LOL, you deserve an entire tray after that. These are fabulous. And smells. OMG, I still cannot be anywhere near cucumber melon scent. On me, or on anyone else. And it was my favorite one!
Oh, that’s funny – cucumber melon
No weird smells for me, just everything is super magnified! No Bath and Body Works for me at the moment – I would probably faint
I lived within 2 hours of Biltmore when I was in high school and my family still lives in SC, but I have never been to Biltmore (the rest of the family has, just not me). Based on your rousing endorsement, I don’t think I will be rushing to correct this.
It sounds miserable and very whine worthy, pregnant or not, but most especially while pregnant! I was once at Williamsburg in the heat of the summer, and though I thought it was a very interesting place, it was not interesting enough to suffer for! Your fluffernutter blondies, however, are very appealing even in the heat! I love the chewiness of a blondie and the melted marshmallow ups the chewy gooey factor!
Oh, I live right outside of Williamsburg and I totally agree! If the weather is uncooperative, it is so miserable! Plus it gets crazy crowded – no thanks
Oh good lord! Forget being pregnant, I probably couldn’t have made it up that many stairs without a baby in my belly, lol! That’s crazy. Thanks for sharing these beautiful blondies though – they look so scrumptious!
Thanks, Georgia! It makes me feel a little better – I was feeling pretty pathetic whining about the stairs
I love fluffernutters! And blondies. And this. And you. And oh my god I am going to start licking the screeeeeeeen.
My husband decimated them! He introduced me to flutternutters in the first place
These stopped me in my tracks on Foodgawker. They look so delicious, and I’m such a sucker for blondies, especially with scorched marshmallows on top. These need to happen soon!
Thanks, Marcie! I hope you love them!
Jennifer,
These look so pretty and fluffernutter is always nice!
This whole post had me laughing like a nut, the pregnant lady hell and the evil velvet ropes in particular.
I did hear that halfway through you took off the audio tour gear in disgust, lol….now I get it totally!
Sharon
Could I have a dozen, please? Thanks for linking up with What’s Cookin’ Wednesday!
Thanks so much, Karly!
