Easy Nightmare Before Christmas Cookies

I’m a premature holiday junkie.

Christmas stuff out in stores before Halloween? Fine by me. Halloween decorations up before October 1? Great!

But, my husband doesn’t seem to agree. Doesn’t he know that his life would be much easier if he just hopped on the premature holiday train?

This year, due to a long weekend trip, uncooperative weather, and a protesting husband, we didn’t get our Halloween decorations up until October 7th. October 7th! We wasted an entire week of potential Halloween awesomeness. I would have just done it myself, but it requires walking on part of the roof and using a ladder. No bueno.

So, I waited patiently (i.e. nagged constantly) and our decorations are finally up. Care for a look?

FYI: These pictures are actually from last year, as it has rained non-stop since we put up our decorations this year. But, the set-up is pretty much the same!

To celebrate the spookification of our house, I made Nightmare Before Christmas cookies! These are very simple, Oogie Boogie cookies. I had trouble with the icing…remember all that rain I mentioned? Not so great for royal icing. But, they are easy and fun, great for a Tim Burton fan!

Nightmare Before Christmas Oogie Boogie Cookies

Ingredients:

  • Circle shaped cookies
  • Black icing, outline and flood
  • Orangy-yellow icing, outline and flood (I combined AmeriColor’s electric orange and electric yellow to achieve this color)
  • Couplers, pastry bags, #2 tips

1. Outline and flood the entire cookie with the orangy-yellow icing with a #2 tip.

Allow the cookie to dry for a couple hours.

2. Outline Oogie Boogie’s shape with black icing with a #2 tip.

You can find plenty of picture online to use as a template!

3. Flood the shape.

i am a premature decorator too!! my husband gets sooo mad. i did (some) Halloween decorations a couple weeks before Oct this year because we were going to be out of town the weekend right before the 1st… didn’t go over well. last year i convinced him that christmas decorations needed to happen before thanksgiving because no one was coming to our house for thanksgiving anyways. totally worked! the only thing he made me wait on was the tree because i physically can’t put it up myself.

LOVE these cookies. so creepy yet so cute at the same time, and not stressfully difficult to do!

OMG, my husband and I have the same disagreement about Christmas too! He refuses to let me put up our trees (yes, plural…sad, right?) before the day after Thanksgiving – so frustrating. I’ve been trying to convince him that doing it on Thanksgiving is not too early – he has yet to agree. Oh well :)

putting up trees (haha.. I had 4 up last year) right after thanksgiving dinner is like a required exercise to work off the mashed potatoes.

I know, right!? I may use this rationale on him this year…see if that works :)

First off, your house decor is awesome!! We just got our stuff up yesterday and its comprised of a handful of magnets and a Halloween banner. Your set-up is legit!!

The cookies are great, too! I love a super simple concept. Circle cookie. Two icing colors. Yet it really offers a big impact!

Last note, humidity/rain + royal icing = ahhhh!!

Thanks, Michelle! I really love going all out on the house and besides the initial investment of the spiders, we only need to buy spiderweb each year, which isn’t too pricy. I did buy some big spider clings to go on the windows this year -I’m excited to put them up :)

And, yeah, the humidity really got me on these! Oh well – it looks like the sun will finally come out today :)

Another great batch of cookies and I’m LOVING your decorations on your house!!! My Halloween decorations rival my Christmas decor! And, I’m just like you…thanks to rain, and a husband’s wonky work hours, my decorations STILL aren’t up! I’m hoping tonight! Again…LOVE this post!

OMG, your house is creepy awesome with all those spiders! Great job!
Those super simple cookies, too. I love that they only require two colors (less stress) and it’s a movie reference!

BTW, friends pick on me on how early I start decorating for the holidays, especially for Christmas. I start early November and finish before Thanksgiving. I usually fly to my mom’s for Thanksgiving and just love returning to a fully decorated home. :)

Thanks, Mike! My husband and I normally stay home for Thanksgiving, but we’re planning on traveling this year – maybe I can convince him that we should do it early so we can come home to a decorated house! :)

Maybe it’s something in the air! I am usually a nut for putting up Halloween decorations up early (like the last week of Sept), but for some reason this year – we didn’t get them until last weekend! I blinked and it was mid-October!

Love those spooky cookies!!
