The Fourth of July is next week.
!!!
How did THAT happen?
Christmas was like a week ago and it was yesterday that I was crying that it was too early for it to be this hot outside.
Now, it is exactly when it is supposed to be this hot outside. Miserably hot outside. Too hot for pregnant ladies, I might add. I think I’ll just hibernate all summer like a lazy, brown bear, munching on Smartfood popcorn and getting sucked into Toddlers & Tiaras marathons (how can something so horrible be SO good!?).
Anyway…
I was invited to the “Sprinkles Will Fly” blog party, by the lovely ladies behind JavaCupcake.com and Bella Cupcake Couture. They wanted us to showcase yummy and fabulous cupcakes fit for the Fourth of July! I was sent beauuuutiful cupcake liners from Bella Cupcake Couture. I mean – look at it!
Now, the liner reminded me of more of a “country” patriotic holiday, kind of like barn stars and the like. Plus, they were chock full of color and shapes, so I wanted the rest of the cupcake and display to be simple in comparison (plus, as you all may have noticed, my blog props are rather limited and I stick with simple!). I wanted some texture on the table, so I used a dishcloth that reminded me of burlap – which I totally would have used if I had it!
For the cupcake itself, I stuck with cherry pie…because, for real, who doesn’t love cherry pie! It starts with a simple, fluffy chocolate cake base, cherry pie filling in the center, and and lovely, creamy frosting. I’ve been holding onto to my teeny tiny container of edible gold stars and I just thought they would be perfect for these cupcakes! It doesn’t compete with the liner (which, let’s be honest, is the star of the show!), but it adds a little something special!
Did I mention that there is a fabulous giveaway too, with over $300 worth of prizes and goodies!? Oh yes indeedy! You can enter using the Rafflecopter widget at the bottom of this post. And, check out the list of other participating bloggers!
- Cake
- One box of Devil’s Food Cake mix
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup of milk
- 3 eggs
- ½ teaspoon butter/vanilla emulsion
- Filling
- 2 cups cherry pie filling
- Frosting
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 7 ounces marshmallow fluff
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Line a muffin pan with cupcake liners. In a large bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, butter, milk, eggs, and butter/vanilla emulsion with a hand mixer on low until ingredients are just combined. Beat on medium speed for 1½ minutes. Fill liners about ⅔ full. Bake for 18-20 minutes. Frost when cooled.
- To fill, cut out a portion of the cooled cupcake with a small, sharp knife in a cone shape. Fill with a spoonful of cherry pie filling.
- To make the frosting, cream together the softened butter and powdered sugar until fluffy. Mix in the marshmallow fluff and vanilla extract on low until combined. Frost cupcakes and garnish with edible gold stars.

Thanks so much, Betsy! For the comment and the fabulous party!
I like the Olivia Swirl in navy blue. I think I could make red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and get all the colors in there!
I like the Meisha Bird With Cherry Blossoms.
My favorite Bella Cupcake wrappers are the Olivia Swirl in sea green or lavender! Although I am also lusting after those edible gold stars you used…
They are all so nice!
Sno Ball Cupcakes would be my favorite
These sound amazing, Jennifer! I love the idea of a surprise cherry pie filling. Yum! And those wrappers are so cool!
Thanks, Janine! The wrappers are pretty awesome!
This looks yummy!
These cupcakes look sooo festive!! I am working on a chocolate cherry cupcake this week too! And this giveaway is awesome! <3
Thanks, Carrie!
I like the patriotic stars and stripes wrappers.
Can’t wait to try it.
There are too many cute liners to pick a favorite. How cool that there are mini sized ones. (Hard to find) I was kind of hoping that she had cow liners since I’m helping my daughter with her son’s 2nd birthday party. It’ll be at the local “farm”.
Oh, these sound so yummy! Got it saved!!
Yum…cherry pie cupcakes sound SO good!!
Thanks, Jill!
I can’t decide which wrapper I like more, so I choose both the Navy and the red/white Olivia Swirl!! Then I have red, white, and blue.
Love these cupcakes, Jennifer!! And I agree, way too hot outside. Time to hibernate indoors with these cupcakes and bad TV.
Thanks, Hayley!
the snow ball ones
I am now craving cherry pie!!
Thanks, Katrina!
Cherry pie is my FAV, I’m pretty sure I would LOVE these.

It is crazy hot outside. I am not pregnant, and I am ready to hibernate!
We’ll hibernate together, Erin!
I love the the stars and stripe ones!!!
How adorable are these?! And the liners are so cute and festive!
Thanks Chung-Ah!
Oh my, cherry filling! I’m a cherry addict, ever since I was a kid…at parties, I would collect all the appetizers with cherry on them and dump the “yucky parts” (cheese, ham, salmon, you name it) on my mother’s plate.
Nowadays, I simply make my boyfriend eat them, bless.
Can’t wait to try this!
Hugs from Uruguay (where it’s delightfully chilly, I’ll try to send some winter vibes your way)
Beth.
Yes, I love “chilly vibes”! I could use some this summer
Cupcakes look out of this world!
I like the blue swirly ones!
Must have one of these!! Those little gold stars are adorable on top!!
There’s nothing more American than cherry pie! LOVE that you turned it into a cupcake! Or is it the other way around? Heehee Either way these are gorgeous! It just sunk in that the 4th of July is next week! It wasn’t even on my radar yet.
It seriously snuck up on me, Reeni! I just hope the rest of the summer flies by too – I’m already ready for fall!
Yummo – and yes, those cupcake liners are completely fabulous – perfect for the 4th.
Thanks, Patricia!
Awesome cupcake recipe, Jennifer! I’m so digging those stars and stripes wrappers too!

What a perfect treat for the Fourth! I love cherry pie, but in cupcake form I’d definitely love it more! Thanks for sharing, Jennifer.
Thanks, Georgia!
Lovin’ the 4th of July wrappers!
I love the Olivia – Red / White wrappers!
The red and white striped wrappers are my favorite
She’s my cherry pie…Now I have that song stuck in my head! Awesome job, and any recipe that comes from a cake mix is number 1 in my book. We can’t ‘bake’ around these parts…
Haha – awesome song!
I don’t use mixes all the time, but sometimes, you just want to make something easy!
Cherry Pie cupcakes! How beautifully all American. They look delicious.
Thanks, Lora!
I like the Olivia Swirl Navy Blue wrappers.
Hi Jennifer,
Those look amazing!!! the little gold stars look so cute paired with these 4th of July cupcake wrappers. Love the old fashioned setting. So happy you joined our blog party. it’s so much fun!
Thanks so much, Carrie, for inviting me! It was a blast and the wrappers are perfection!
I love the union jack ones – even if it’s not really that patriotic
These look amazing! Now I have the perfect fourth of July BBQ take-along…except I am also pregnant and can relate to the constant desire to do absolutely nothing that cannot be done from my couch. Why did we decide pregnancy in the summer was acceptable?!
Oh Kelly – you are SO right! I see a lot of air conditioned venues in my future
Keep cool, mama!
I love the ones in this post!!
I can’t wait to try these cupcakes. I just discovered your blog and I think it’s fantastic! I will repost with my rating after making.
Thanks so much, Kristin! I hope you like them
Sometimes, I put a package of instant pudding mix in box mix cakes that I make. It makes them more dense and adds a deeper flavor so-to-speak. What are this cupcakes texture like without the pudding? Do you think if I do add it, that it will make the cupcake too dense? Either way, I am going to try it and let you know when I am done!
Hi Kristin! This cupcake is already quite light and airy, so if you wanted to make them more dense, you could definitely try adding pudding to the mix. But, I’ve never done it myself on these cupcakes, so I couldn’t say for sure how it would go!
Ok, one last question, have you put the frosting in the fridge for a few hours? Well, I have, lol. Now, it is a bit hard and I am unsure if I should let it sit out on the counter to soften up. I have heard of where you take 1/3 of frosting and melt it in the microwave, then pour that into cold frosting to get the frosting back to former consistency. Any direction here would be great as I have never actually worked with marshmallow frosting. Thanks so much and sorry for all the questions.
Patriot wrappers.
I like the red/white Olivia wrappers. Thanks!
Olivias swirl in navy & red are so cute!
I like the Patriotic Stars and Stripes wrappers…preferably with one of your cherry pie cupcakes inside!
YUM!
Hi Kristin! I didn’t have enough left over from my cupcakes, so I have no experience with refrigerating this frosting! However, I would not microwave any portion of it – I would be concerned about the marshmallow becoming poofy/tacking and having issues with the consistency! If you have time, I would just leave it out at room temperature to soften up again
